Solo Exhibitions

Tajh Rust: Eve is still on view at Sakhile&Me in Frankfurt am Main, Germany until December 21, 2019

In Eve, Tajh Rust introduces a new series of figurative oil on canvas paintings influenced by the artist’s experiences during his residency at Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal in Dakar. The title is a play on the word “eve”, referencing the time of day (evening), the beginning point of an observed event (New Year’s Eve), or the name of the biblical character in the Garden of Eden. The various meanings of the word, each suggesting action, the anticipation of action, or the reflection on an action that has already taken place, conjures up a feeling of expectation for the viewer in each painting. Tajh Rust captures a strong sense of the people he paints, paying attention to their surroundings – whether indoors, outdoors or in an unmarked context or background – as an elemental part of depicting his subjects.

Mark Bradford: Cerberus is still on view at Hauser & Wirth in London, United Kingdom until December 21, 2019

Cerberus is Mark Bradford’s first exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in London and extends across the entirety of the gallery’s spaces. The exhibition of new work, including the film ‘Dancing in the Street’ (2019), sees Bradford return to ancient mythology, a consistent source of inspiration for the artist. Specifically, he now engages the many headed dog guarding the entryway to Hades, Cerberus. It is a particularly resonant metaphor for Bradford, who has always been fascinated by interstitial spaces and figures. In fact, of the relationship between his art and his community engagement, Bradford has often declared his imperative to have one foot firmly planted in each. ‘Cerberus’ is an exhibition dedicated to places difficult and in-between, where conflicts arise, but also where the hope of resolution is to be found.

John Akomfrah: Mimesis – African Soldier is still on view at New Art Exchange in Nottingham, United Kingdom until December 31, 2019

The First World War (WW1) was waged between empires that were global in their ambitions and reach. Between 1914 and 1918, millions of African and colonial soldiers served in long campaigns that spanned the whole of the African and European continents, contributing to victories throughout WW1. These soldiers from British and French African territories were brought to Europe’s western front, where hundreds and thousands lost their lives alongside unknown, unheralded and undocumented African labourers and carriers. Mimesis: African Soldier seeks to commemorate these Africans and colonial soldiers who fought, served and died during WW1. Projected onto three screens, the installation combines newly created film, shot by Akomfrah in locations around the world, a powerful sound score and historic footage that speak to the African experience of WW1.

Group Exhibitions

The Sorcerer’s Burden: Contemporary Art and the Anthropological Turn is still on view at The Contemporary Austin in Austin, TX, United States until January 19, 2020

The Sorcerer’s Burden: Contemporary Art and the Anthropological Turn explores the complicated relationship between art and anthropology as examined in the work of contemporary artists. Focusing on artists who appropriate, manipulate, and transform elements found in anthropological methodologies and practices to create contemporary works that are alternately subversive, humorous, satirical, dark, playful and enchanting, The Sorcerer’s Burden considers the complex results that emerge when contemporary artists, curators, and exhibitions turn to anthropology. The artists—working in painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, and performance—explore the intersection between fact and fiction and the questionable proposal that any field, media, or genre might propose to convey the “truth.”
