Wangechi Mutu is a Kenyan artist living in New York whose work is based on a wide variety of media including drawing, collage, sculpture, video, and performance. Inspired by ideas found in history and literature, she plays with the relation between reality and fiction to investigate themes of gender, race, and colonialism. She mainly explores the female identity and sexuality as well as women’s roles throughout history, using the form or figures representing the black female body.
