Self-portraits are often seen as a reflection on identity and self-awareness. In their images, the photographers explore their signifiers, whether intimate and personal, specific to gender, race, culture, social class, or sexual orientation, for intellectual discourse. The self-portrait is inherently autobiographical, whether abstract, subtle, or intimately detailed.

In the 2000s, the growing number of conflicts and social issues in Africa encouraged the involvement of African visual storytellers. They document the undergoing changes in the world, using striking images often enhanced with digital photography. They deliver news in a creative way that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Their images have increasingly been exhibited in art galleries alongside paintings and fine art photographs.
